Applying the Vondrak band filter to a series of LOD and sunspot relative number (R), amplitude variations of the 11-year term during 1800-1985 were obtained. The results show that the solar cyclic signal in the LOD series is weak and unstable. The amplitude of the 11 yr term in R series has long-periodic variation. Some results on the effects of solar activity on the earth's rotation through atmospheric motion are examined. From the variation of LOD obtained by a band filter, it is found that maxima of the amplitude of the annual term in LOD occur at the same time as those of the sunspot number. This implies that the angular momentum imbalance between the circulations in the Southern Hemisphere and the Northern Hemisphere is controlled in some way by solar activity.
