Velocity expansion functions, a set of modified Hough functions, and equivalent depths are used to study the effects of mean winds and dissipation on the vertical and horizontal structures of the diurnal propagating tide. The results can be used to interpret salient features of recent numerical simulations of the propagating diurnal tide such as the formation of an amplitude peak near 90 km and amplitude broadening with latitude. The present functions have application to the interpretation of tidal observations in the 70-100-km region.
