Spectroscopic auroral measurements of the O2(+) first negative (1N) and N2(+) 1N emissions over the 5175-5325-A wavelength range were obtained along with coincident incoherent scatter radar measurements. The altitude of the peak E-region electron density was shown to vary from about 105 km for the harder aurora to about 130 km for the softer aurora. The observed I/O2(+) 1N;2,0 to I/N2(+) 1N;0,3 spectral ratio supports the results of a model analysis.
