Solar Wind: Interplanetary Magnetic Field

Variations of the solar wind velocity when crossing "thick" sector boundaries of the interplanetary magnetic field are discussed. It is shown that the relative value of the velocity depends on peculiarities of the IMF's configuration in the boundary region: in the case in which a loop of the IMF is open toward the Sun, the solar-wind velocity turns out to be systematically smaller than in the case in which a loop of the IMF is open away from the Sun. The results obtained are interpreted within the framework of a model with reconnection of the magnetic field on the interplanetary current layer.
