Magnetohydrodynamics: Earth Magnetosphere

Scientific paper

The basic results of an examination of the quasi-stationary MHD-flow of the solar wind around the Earth's magnetosphere are reviewed. Primary attention is accorded to the question of calculating the magnetospheric and electric fields in the transition layer and at the boundary of the magnetosphere. An analysis is made of the kinetic approximation of a linear diffusion model. The condition for the existence of a magnetic barrier region where the kinetic approximation is not applicable is determined. Based on the results of the numerical integration of the MHD-equations in the magnetic barrier region, an analysis is made of the properties of the solution - the fall-off in the gas-dynamic pressure and the growth in the magnetic pressure to a maximum on the surface of the flow. As a further step the problem of calculating the reconnection region on the background of the magnetic barrier is considered.
