The engineering aspects of space probe development are examined. The study of the formation and evolution of the solar system is reviewed, focusing on additional information which could be gained from space probes. Consideration is given to the engineering requirements of space probe power supply, telemetry, tracking, command, attitude and orbit control, data-handling, and temperature control subsystems. An overview is given of the major space probe missions to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and comets.
