Regge calculus is used here to construct time-symmetric initial data for axisymmetric nonrotating vacuum spacetimes. The Regge calculus equivalent of the ADM Hamiltonian constraint equation at a moment of time symmetry is derived. A brief review of the continuum theory of the initial-value problem for Brill waves is presented. The Regge-Hamiltonian constraint equation is specialized to that of a Brill-type spacetime and is solved using a conformal mapping technique and a successive overrelaxation interaction algorithm. The results provide accurate and reliable solutions with which the Regge calculus results can be compared.
