The author analyzes the evolution of the Higgs field in the minimal SU(5) grand unified theory and he shows that only in a narrow range of parameters symmetry is broken directly to SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1) but there is no inflation. Inflation is possible but then the SU(5) group is broken to SU(4)×U(1). During the inflationary era temperature never becomes very low and after releasing the latent heat the universe is reheated to a temperature comparable to the critical temperature.
