In order to develop the new plasma diagnostic for Si III, electron and proton collision cross sections and intersystem radiative transition probabilities had to be calculated. The calculations of these parameters are discussed. The observed values of the density sensitive line ratios (R) are compared with curves of the theoretical ratio of the emissivities, R(Ne), of selected lines. The sensitivity of R(NE) to errors in the atomic parameters is studied. The Si III density sensitive line ratios were used together with several other density diagnostics from C III and 0 IV to interpret new ultraviolet observations between 1175 A and 1950 A. Empirical models for a quiet solar region and a flare are constructed.
