Based upon the assumption of a universe filled with a noninteracting mixture of nonrelativistic matter and radiation, a test of general relativity can, in principle, be performed by measuring the first five derivatives of the scale factor. The Robertson-Walker metric describing a homogeneous isotropic universe is used as model for the universe in a not too early stage of its development. It is determined that simple relations can be derived, between the 'physical' parameters of the universe and the 'geometrical' parameters involving the first four time derivatives of the scale factor. While a strict relation between the first five time derivatives holds if general relativity applies, conditional relations can be derived if less than five parameters but more than two are known.
