The opal content of deep-sea sediment can be estimated by subtracting non-biogenic silica, calculated from the aluminum and magnesium concentrations in the sediment, from the total silica content of the samples. Unlike most previously described methods, this calculation is capable of yielding reliable estimates of opal in pre-Pleistocene sediments because it is unaffected by structural changes that take place in opal as it ages.
