The geosynchronous ESA satellite, Geos, has been selected as the reference spacecraft for the International Magnetospheric Study (IMS), conducted in the years from 1976-79. Attention is given to a study of the response of the near-earth environment to varying conditions in interplanetary space. Specific areas of investigation include particle, wave, and magnetic field measurements. Experiments are carried out by seven payload subsections, which can operate in a frequency range up to 80 kHz for electric fields, and up to 30 kHz for magnetic fields. It is noted that the longitudinal position of Geos can be varied from 35 deg E to 0 deg.
