A substantial portion of flare energy is radiated in the soft X-ray region. Modification of the solar chromosphere by such a soft X-ray flux at wavelengths of 1 to 300 A is examined quantitatively within the approximation of steady-state analysis. It is shown that for a typical flare with a soft X-ray source characterized by a temperature of 10 million K, an emission measure of 2 by 10 to the 49th power, and a projected source size of 2 by 10 to the 18th power sq cm, the electron number density and temperature are enhanced by factors of ten and two, respectively, in the layers above the temperature minimum. Details of the basic physical process are discussed together with implications of the analytical results.
