The gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric mass of incoherent matter (dust) is investigated within the framework of the Newtonian theory and it is shown that the results are identical to the relativistic results obtained by Oppenheimer and Snyder.
It is a pleasure to thank Professor J.L. Synge discussions with whom lead to the above problem.
A referee of this letter has kindly drew my attention to the work of Milne and McCrea [2], McCrea [3] and Bondi [4]. Although these papers deal exclusively with cosmology it has to be said, in retrospect, that the results presented above can, indeed, be deduced from the above papers. As these papers, however, prededed the relativistic treatment by Oppenheimer and Snyder of the specific problem considered in this letter the question whether an exact analogy existed between the Newtonian and the relativistic treatment of the problem could not have arisen.
