A review is given of observations of the nightglow continuum extending from about 7000 A to longer wavelengths. It is suggested that the source of this emission is radiative association of atomic oxygen via the repulsive 3 Pi (u) state to vibrationally excited O2 (3 Sigma g(-)). Predicted spectra are compared with nightglow and laboratory observations. Other implications for the physics of the thermosphere and upper mesosphere are discussed.
