Simultaneous ground (Dunedin) and satellite (Isis 2) reception of whistlers has provided direct evidence that most whistlers are ducted, i.e., propagate along field aligned paths through the magnetosphere. In particular it was found that such whistlers, while downgoing, are observed only over a narrow longitude range, about 200 km of satellite travel, and only near the L-shell of propagation deduced from dispersion analysis. On the other hand, well defined whistlers of unvarying dispersion characteristics are observed on the ground and downgoing aboard Isis 2 over a very wide latitude range, during which the satellite travels up to 2000 km. The dispersion characteristics and latitude range of observation are interpreted in terms of non-ducted prolongitudinal (PL) propagation in magnetospheric models consistent with Isis 2 density measurements.
