A better understanding of the mechanisms important in the production of the forbidden O I green line feature in meteor wakes may result from a theoretical approach to the relevant dynamic and reaction processes in a plasma column. A model is developed in which the rates of excitation and removal of metastable atoms permit a description of the resulting 5577 A emission.
