The equations for the transfer of light through a thick layer are studied with the aid of a computer in the presence of Thomson scattering and Compton effect. The redshifts, top intensities and red asymmetry of Gaussian-shaped spectral lines are tabulated against the optical thickness and the normalized width. It is shown that the equivalent width of the lines is conserved in the transfer and that the central intensity is conserved for wide enough lines. Two astrophysical applications of the resulting equations are proposed: to the spectra of white dwarfs, and to the spectra of Orion Nebula.
