Space physics data archives' primary goal is to provide a safe location for storing data from missions while simultaneously enabling scientists easy access to the data, often associated with value-added services. Different data archives are operated under different policies and correspondingly the data retrieval is also archive-specific. Recently, Virtual Observatories (VxOs) have emerged with the goal of providing unified data discovery and retrieval of data from different repositories regardless of their location. In this presentation, we discuss the symbiotic relationship between VxOs and data archives. In particular we will discuss and highlight components of the VxO environment that are potentially of interest and benefit to data archives. For example, the VxOs utilize a standard data model, SPASE, when describing data, while data archives often use their own metadata or even several different kinds. Adopting a common metadata standard has provided many benefits to the VxOs that can be applied to data archives. In particular it facilitates data exchange, lowers the effort required to create a complete metadata set, enables wider review and quicker updates, etc. In addition to metadata standards the VXOs are developing tools for data visualisation and/or analysis, tools that can be used by the wider community and will make it easier to use the data provided by the archives.
