A FEW weeks ago, while looking through some miscellaneous objects at the
premises of the Egypt Exploration Society, I discovered a portion of a
groma, an ancient surveying instrument, commonly used in
Græco-Roman times for setting out straight lines and directions at
right angles, in building operations as well as in land instruments.
