The stormtime magnetosphere-ionosphere (MI) system is influenced by the presence of outflowing ionospheric ions. Using the multifluid LFM global simulation the stormtime MI interaction with and without ionospheric outflows is compared for the moderate 31 Aug 2005 storm. Oxygen outflow is controlled casually via empirical relations. The inner boundary condition in the simulation affects the characteristics of the outflow. By relaxing the natural hard wall boundary in LFM it is possible to control the outflow more realistically whilst also allowing for the possibility of polar wind outflow. Ion outflow inflates the magnetosphere and changes the position of the nightside reconnection point. This magnetic reconfiguration changes the amount of solar wind plasma entrained in the convection cycle. Oxygen ions are also entrained in this process resulting in a different mass composition in the inner magnetosphere. An oxygen diamagnetic ring current is created whilst the strength of the proton ring current is reduced. The change in mass composition at the inner boundary affects the auroral electron precipitation and hence ionospheric conductance. This modification in turn changes the net field-aligned current closing in the MI system and the cross polar cap potential.
