Scientific paper

The substorm may be defined as an intermittent, global scale energy release event in a planetary magnetosphere. Its study has largely been a reductionist one - focussed on its component parts and, in particular, the details of the instability responsible for substorm onset. However, the ambiguity over this and possibility of more than one instability, together with the observation of substorm-like events in very different planetary environments, suggests that an alternative holistic approach may be profitable. In this presentation I will show how substorm occurrence at Earth, Jupiter, and Saturn may be described by the same simple mathematical model, corresponding to an integrate-and-fire process. I will sketch out the physical basis for this minimal substorm model, making a bridge to the reductionist view. Finally, I will discuss other applications related to the substorm triggering hypothesis and prediction.
