Supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud is the first astronomical body other than the sun from which neutrinos have been detected. These neutrinos, produced by the core collapse of Sanduleak -69 deg 202, have not only confirmed the basic theories of type II supernova causality and energetics (without being able to distinguish prompt from delayed shock ejection), but also heralded the birth of extra-solar neutrino astronomy.
