This paper reviews in some detail the ideas of differential photometry using a CCD detector. It discusses the basic ideas of observational uses of a CCD for this kind of work and then gives details of the quantitative aspects. Signal-to-noise calculations for a point source, optimum extraction of the digital data via software, and correct statistical error assesment of the data are some of the topics covered. An observational example is presented.
