Essential features of the proton activity of the sun and characteristics of solar proton events in 1989 are determined on the basis of investigations of solar cosmic rays conducted between 1964 and 1990. A comparison of values of heliogeophysical parameters suggests that 1989 was the year of the solar cosmic ray maximum for the period under consideration.
