Different magnetosphere models developed between 1960 to 1989 are described. These models are divided into three main groups: models with calculated magnetopause; models with imposed magnetopause; and models based on physical data. Almost all recent models are imposed magnetopause based. Only a few recent models take actual experimental measurements into account. Filiation between old and new models is shown in diagrammatic form. Practical applications of theoretical models are discussed.
