Images of light-emitting gaseous structures in giant elliptical galaxies, obtained using a Fabry-Perot interferometer setup with CCD detector at the primary focus of the 3.5-m telescope at Calar Alto, are presented and discussed. Consideration is given to M 87, the central galaxy of the Virgo cluster, which exhibits synchrotron emission from an optical jet as well as gaseous-filament structures emitting strongly in the 658.4-nm forbidden line of N II and a hot X-ray-emitting halo. The filaments are attributed to thermal instabilities in the bow shock produced by the motion of M 87 through the hot gas of the Virgo cluster. Also described are similar filamentary structures in NGC 1275, the central galaxy of the Perseus cluster.
