It has recently been suggested that the correlation between the presence of absorption lines and optical variability in quasars can be interpreted in terms of the physical conditions in the absorbing clouds around these objects. The present note shows that the observational evidence is also consistent with the interpretation that the degree of variability and the presence of absorption lines are independently correlated with redshift and have no causal relationship to one another. The redshift distributions of 74 variable and nonvariable quasars is subjected to a chi-squared test, and the result indicates that the occurrence of optical variability is greatest among the low-redshift quasars. A previously established correlation between high redshifts and the presence of absorption lines is noted along with the possibility of observational selection effects.
