The observation of elliptically polarized OPMs as a characteristic feature of single radio pulses poses a major challenge to conventional pulsar theory, which implies emission in a single linearly polarized mode. It is argued that elliptically polarized OPMs can result as a propagation effect in an oscillatory model for the pulsar magnetosphere, in which the electrons and positrons have a periodic counter streaming motion in which their maximum Lorentz factor is γ~106.
