The paper examines the role of transient electrodynamic processes in the ionosphere, associated with pressure gradients, electric fields and electroconductivity in the formation of magnetic variations especially during magnetic storms and substorms. An examination of this sort can be fruitful for the determination of the electrodynamic parameters of the ionosphere from an amplitude-frequency analysis of ground recordings of geomagnetic disturbances. The connection between magnetic disturbances and ionospheric processes is studied on the basis of equations of one-fluid hydrodynamics incorporated in a model of the unsteady plane-parallel flow of a partially ionized gas in a channel.
