Results are presented of a quantitative study of the two main sources of image deformation introduced by the time-delay integration CCD read-out technique: the discrete shifting of CCD pixels to match a continuously moving object (an east-west deformation), and the curvature of objects across the CCD columns (a north-south deformation). It is found that undersampled data, i.e., Gaussian point spread function standard deviations less than or approximately equal to 0.85 pixels, suffer severely due to the former source, while star trail curvature deviations greater than or approximately equal to 0.8 pixels can lead to images susceptible to the latter. A comparison between three systems which use the TDI mode is also presented.
