A model-based method for the short-term forecasting of large-scale negative ionospheric disturbances in the F2 region is evaluated using a large amount of retrospective ionospheric observations conducted in different regions of the globe under a variety of heliogeophysical conditions. The method is based on the computer-aided diagnostics of magnetic storms from data of the ground monitoring of the geomagnetic field. The suitability of the method for solving practical problems is demonstrated.
