A review of cases of cometary nucleus splitting observed over the past 150 years is presented, and an analysis of possible splitting mechanisms is conducted. An original method is used to calculate the fragment separation velocities for a number of comets observed in recent years, namely, 1945 II, 1982 b, and 1982 c, 1988 e, 1988 g, Van Biesbroeck, and Neujmin 3. The results agree with those obtained for some cases of cometary splittings by other researchers.
