It is demonstrated how electron density profiles determined by the EISCAT UHF radar may be used to estimate proton energy spectra during a polar cap absorption which was detected by the GOES-7 satellite on August, 12th 1989. With certain assumptions, the electron density profiles detected by EISCAT can be inverted and the particle flux is determined as a function of energy, i.e., the proton energy spectrum at the top of the atmosphere.
