The various mechanisms that can explain the summer nonzonalities of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere are presented. The possibility of planetary wave penetration across the equator is discussed. Some numerical model results are given to demonstrate the effects of coupling between different layers of the atmosphere due to planetary wave propagation.
