The monthly means of total ozone (TO) calculated from ground-based measurements taken at 18 stations in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) midlatitudes are analysed for the period 1963-1997. The similarities and dissimilarities in the TO variations (including trend and `natural' variations) over Europe and North America are discussed. A dependence of the summer (June-August) TO on its preceding midwinter (January-February) values is found. The correlation coefficient between the summer and midwinter TO is particularly large (/~0.86) over North America, whereas it is significantly lower over Europe (0.62). The summer TO over Europe is independent of its preceding midwinter value (as opposite to the ozone behaviour over North America) after winter that was rich in ozone. Analyses of the results of a standard TO trend model allow to suggest main factors influencing the correlation. In general the observed features of the summer-midwinter TO dependence can be reproduced by the model accounting for the TO linear trend and the ``natural'' TO variations due to the quasi-biennial oscillations, the El Nin~o/Southern oscillations, and 11-year solar cycle.
