Detection of HI emission from a number of E galaxies is reported. 33 galaxies were searched for HI the first time. Seven of the detected E galaxies are isolated, 9 have nearby companions, and 11 are in compact groups and/or strongly interacting systems. Nearby confusing sources may be responsible for some of the detections. The large number of elliptical galaxies in groups (in this sample) suggests that gravitational interaction and mergers might be an important source of supply of interstellar matter for elliptical galaxies.
