Analyses of various inflationary models require knowledge of the Higgs potential V(φ) over a wide range of φ, and thus the effects of running couplings can be significant. Explicitly solving the renormalization group equation (RGE) for an inflationary model, it is shown that the conventional procedure of using ``running couplings'' in the one-loop coefficient is quantitatively incorrect. It is also shown that the effects of scalar loops cannot be neglected, and the effects of finite temperature on the RGE are discussed. We also show that, although the effective potential is gauge dependent, the solution of the classical equations of motion is not.
