It is suggested that 'dumping' into the ionosphere of energetic electrons responsible for auroral absorption may be caused not by a magnetoacoustic wave but by a surface wave propagating along the internal boundary of the plasma sheet. The propagation velocity of this surface wave in the projection on the ionosphere is several km/s and agrees with observed velocities of auroral-absorption propagation.
