The dependence of the location and configuration of the main ionospheric trough on universal time is studied on the basis of latitudinal profiles on NmaxF2 obtained in December 1967 and January 1968. The data indicate various mechanisms for the formation of the main ionospheric trough; particular consideration is given to mechanisms that lead to the disappearance of residual ionization and to the field-aligned-current mechanism.
