We give a general overview of the design philosophy behind the scientific analysis software for the Hard X-ray Imager on board MIRAX. The aim of the software development process is to re-use as much software as possible between the development phase and flight phase of the mission, working on standardized data formats (FITS) and in a standardized, HEASOFT-based software environment. Results from a ``proof of concept'' study to develop an interactive analysis system for the analysis of realtime (laboratory) data are presented.
