A detailed analysis of the susceptibility of soft X-ray telescopes using grazing incidence optics to low-energy electrons is presented. The transmission of electrons through each element in a typical soft X-ray telescope is examined and a Monte-Carlo technique is applied to grazing incidence mirror systems. The analysis is carried out with specific reference to the UK Wide Field Camera (WFC) on ROSAT and to the past Einstein Observatory which are examples of telescopes using grazing incidence X-ray optics at opposite extremes of the grazing incidence angle. At the same time, however, it is of general relevance to many planned and past grazing incidence X-ray telescopes.
