Aperture Synthesis

Aperture synthesis in the visible or in the infrared requires exact superposition of waves coming from two different telescopes. If the superposition is not perfect, the Fresnel's diffraction introduces some degradation which involves an attenuation of fringes contrast. This attenuation is eventually negligible in the visible but reaches a value of 20 to 30% in the intrared. It's a very important phenomenon which one should not ignore if one wants to estimate the fringe visibility better than 10%. The authors give an analytical expression of this diminuation in order to correct measurements.
