A brief discussion is given of the effect of observational selection upon the discovery of spectroscopic and visual binaries of high eccentricity. HD 210647 is shown to be a spectroscopic binary with a period of 7.75 years and an eccentricity of 0.904. This is the highest eccentricity ever found for a spectroscopic binary, and the first to exceed 0.9.
