The paper reports on the cooling at liquid-helium temperature of the 2270 kg 5056 Al bar at CERN. The antenna is equipped with a resonant capacitive transducer operating at constant electric charge with an FET low-noise amplifier. The transducer is tuned to the antenna within less than 1 Hz, and the two normal-mode frequencies are nu(-) = 908.160 Hz and n(+) = 924.234 Hz with an applied electric field in the transducer of 10 to the 6th V/m. The corresponding overall merit factors are Q(-) = 5.20 x 10 to the 6th and Q(+) = 7.25 x 10 to the 6th. For several weeks of antenna operation, Brownian noise values in agreement with calculated values have been obtained. Also reported are results of tests performed on a dc SQUID, the input of which was connected to a commercial capacitor via a transformer with a turn ratio of 1000.
