The large-amplitude Pc 4-5 waves frequently observed in the electric field data obtained on board GEOS 2 are investigated. It is found that the events of 2 mV/m or larger amplitude are often accompanied by magnetic field data containing the signature of a compression of the magnetosphere, and that the occurrence of the compression coincides with the recording of a sudden storm commencement on ground. Results of analyses of the typical changes in the electric and magnetic fields indicate the existence of features that are consistent with the theory of the field line resonances. It is shown that these sudden electric field pulsations are cavity and field-line resonances.
