The hydromagnetic-precursor hypothesis states that, before a flare stream reaches the magnetosphere, specific magnetic-field oscillations are observed which are due to the penetration into the magnetosphere of hydromagnetic waves preceding the flare stream. This paper gives a theoretical description of this phenomenon and examines relevant experimental data. It is noted that flare-stream precursors may be sought in geomagnetic pulsations preceding sudden storm commencements.
