Visual observations of the destruction of the westward-moving auroral bend are summarized. The bend is modeled as the ionospheric projection of a magnetospheric plasma tube filled with hot plasma; the dynamics of the plasma tube is determined by the ExB drift of the plasma, and the electric field is generated in the case of the closure of magnetospheric field-aligned currents through the ionosphere. The system is unstable with respect to the excitation of drift-type flute pressure waves, and chaotization of wave phases and amplitudes produces turbulent motion in the bend region, filling the plasma tube.
