The characteristics of electrons precipitating into the auroral ionosphere are evaluated from the distribution of field-aligned currents (FACs) obtained from ground-based magnetic measurements. The global pattern of the FACs is shown to be related to precipitation zones and parameters. In particular, currents flowing into the ionosphere are related to the diffuse precipitation of soft electrons.
