The shales of the Manganese Shale Group are featured geochemically by their relatively high manganese content, the predominance of ferrous over ferric iron, the sympathetic behaviour of cobalt, nickel, chromium, and vanadium with total iron, an inverse relationship of strontium and barium and a direct relationship of boron and barium. Evidence is presented to indicate that the source rocks of the Manganese Shales were acid gneisses.
